Regulated Health Professional Roles in Canada
Some health professions are regulated by health regulatory colleges. These are not teaching colleges but self-governing bodies established by law to regulate the profession. For example, the College of Pharmacists regulates all of the pharmacists in Ontario; the College of Midwives regulates midwives; and the College of Chiropractors regulates chiropractors. These colleges protect the public's right to safe, effective and ethical health care, and they do so under a law called the Regulated Health Professions Act.
To practise as a regulated health professional, an individual must be a member of the regulatory college for his or her chosen profession, and hold a certificate of registration from the college. Regulated health providers are required by law to deliver competent, ethical and professional services, and are accountable to the public through their respective colleges.
